It has helped me to understand the importance of letting students assess their personal work as well as work from their peers. When assessment is centered around students, the possibility for success is greater!

It has helped me to understand the importance of letting go and placing responsibility in the students hands in determining how they will be assessed.

It has helped me realize that my role as a teacher is not to be the "star of the show" and control every aspect of my classroom. I must release more of the responsibility to my students and take a step (or 4!) back. When students take charge of their learning, they feel ownership and pride, and are more likely to learn and retain knowledge.

Module 5 has helped me think about how important student-centered assessments really are. As teachers we often skip this crucial step. I think when students get involved, they feel a sense of pride in their completed work because they were a part of the assessment process.

I agree with Jodi. This module helped me realize that children can be in charge of their own progress and assessment.

I see where I am lacking in assessing the 21st learning skills I am teaching.

I feel I need to let my classroom be more student centered. I am a firm believer that kids learn from kids; however, I don't always practice that in my classroom.

I can see the benefit of self and peer assessments. It will encourage my students and raise their expectations of themselves and their partners.

It has helped me think about finding ways to guide students in self-assessment and peer assessment. Giving students responsibility for their own assessment allows them to feel more ownership of their projects and develop pride in their work.

Module 5 has helped me to realize the importance of having organized rubrics, checklists, etc. to help guide assessment throughout a project and not just at the end. It also helped me to realize the importance of allowing the kids to assess themselves and each other.

It reminds me that students need a sense of ownership in what they are doing. Just as I discovered earlier with my brochure, we too often give them too much information instead of letting students be more creative. If students communicate with one another, they are more likely to get ideas or suggestions from a friend that seem more ideal from them (verses always coming from an adult). Students need to learn that it is their responsibility to take on tasks and succeed with them rather than just memorizing what an adult tells them. I want to let my students set more goals and become much more independent in their tasks, productions, and assessments.

This module has stressed the importance of student ownership in both their learning and their assessment. A student uses higher order thinking skills when assessing their own work or that of others. It teaches them the skills they will need when they grow up and are in the working world.

Module 5 has helped me see the importance of changing my outlook on assessment. Not only should I assess my students, but I should allow students to asses themselves and their classmates. This means teachers have to give up some of our “control”, but it is essential to prepare our students for the real world.

This module has opened my eyes about what I haven't been providing my students when it comes to their assessment. I have done a limited amount of projects in my class this year, and did not think to provide my students with rubrics, plans, etc... that would help them take more control of their learning. I feel that focusing on student assessments for the next year would be beneficial to me and my students. Providing me with some great websites (4teachers.org)has really encouraged me!

I learned that there are many ways to assess students' work. I like the idea of handing over assessment to the students and leaving it open-ended.

I realize that there is still so much I have to learn to be an effective teacher of 21 Century skills. I really liked the new teaching strategy 3-2-1 for student peer grouping. I think that I'll be implimenting this in my class very soon.
